Mahaabhaarat has several such stories which are out of its main stream. If those stories are given at the same place where they should be, the continuation of the main stream is broken and the text will become unnecessary long. That is why most such stories have been given in this section. If one wishes, he can skip them - Mahaabhaarat main stream will still continue. Since most stories are narrated in Mahaabhaarat, those stories are provided with references of MBH Parv and chapters; but some are not in Mahaabhaarat, those stories are not provided with those references - for them only the reference of that place is given from where they have branched.  Some stories are short, they have been incorporated in the MBH Kathaa only --

Ramcharitmanas is most widely recited and held in most households in India and in the world.It contains 17 prayers , seven in Sanskrit said by Tulsidas jee in the beginning of each kand and one in Hindi. All other prayers are in Hindi and said by others; Uttar Kand 6,Bal kand 4, Aranya kand, 3, Lanka kand,3, Ayodhya Kand 1, and Kishkindha Kand 1; By Shivjee 2, vedas, Sanakadi Rishi, Narad jee, Brahma jee, Atri Rishi, Kaushaliya jee,Indera Dev jee   ; one each..

FOREIN FOLK TALES TRANSLATED IN HINDI

 

While on assignment in different countries Nigeria, Ethiopia, Lesotho , Canada, North America etc, I had the opportunity to access the hard-to-find resources of information in Research Libraries (Institute of African Studies, Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Institute of Southern African Studies etc). I collected  more than 1600 folktales of those countries.

After my retirement I, have been working on the project "Gyan Daan" without any objective for any financial gains. Thinking that Hindi speaking people in India and abroad, especially the children ( more in rural areas ) need to know about the  cultures of other countries  than of India - foreign countries. Literature of Folktales was a good medium to develop  this awareness. There is a lot of literature in English and other languages but nothing  in HINDI, so, I started translating the folktales in Hindi. During last twenty years, I have developed a kind of mini-library of HINDI FOLKTALES with more than 1600 stories packed in 105 books. ( see the list of all  compilations/books , attached herewith);

I have arranged those folktales in several books for publishing in PRINT media, ELECTRONIC media, and Braille also;

Most of the folktales from Africa and South America ( about 450 or so ) are not published anywhere. Stories from Europe, America, Canada, China, Russia etc. are too many and published in standard print media. Only the most popular ones are selected and translated. These stories are so popular that they are even dramatized on TV channels, and You tube and dramatized through films and documentaries. They are most popular throughout the world. Unfortunately, nothing in Hindi language.

I am not a professional translator but tried to translate these stories in simple " BOL CHAAL KEE BHASHA" so that children in rural areas may read them comfortably without looking for meanings of the word.

CLASSIC BOOKS

In 1850,  a literary Critic and Historian, Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve stated his answer to the question " What is Classic?"  " The idea of classic implies that has continuance  and consistence and  produces unity and tradition , fashions and transmits itself and endures ..   " ( Literary and Philosophical Essays ,1909-1914; vol 32, Oct. 1850).

. work translated in several languages (work admired in various countries ),

. work published by reputed publishers all over the world (work admired in various countries ),

. work being published over and over again for a long period  ( contents have powerful message  and value for the society ) ,

. they are powerful , have a certain eternal and irrepressible  freshness,   healthy, elastic and everlasting recognition,

. Read again and again with ever deepening  pleasure.

with above mentioned definition and criteria , when a literature survey was conducted  for WORLD CLASS Classic LITERATURE of FOLK TALES, it was found that out of very few books , there were only three following books related to Indian folk tales:

1. Folk-Tales of Kashmir : Rev. J. Hinton Knowles. London, (Ludgate Hill )  Trubner & Co. 1888, 510p;

2. Folk-Tales of Bengal: Lal Behari Dey, MACMILLAN AND CO., LIMITED
ST. MARTIN'S STREET, LONDON, 1883; 271 p

3. Tales of Punjab told by the people; Flora Annie Steel; London; Macmillan & Co; Ltd. 1894 422 p;

Above mentioned three books of Folk tales of India have been published by most reputed publishers of the world including Forgotten Books, Penguin Classics over the period of 125 years or more , being published even recently in 2018;  published over and over again; translated in several languages ; now available in digital media , " Goodreads.com " and " Gutenberg.org"

Considering that such popular classics are not available in HINDI, books are translated in Hindi for a wider Hindi speaking population in India and abroad. " FOLK TALES OF BENGAL " is  published by the National Book Trust of India (NBT) , the other two should also be published soon.

 

 

Our project "GYAN DAAN "  has so far  published some of them in print media ; Indira Publishers, Bhopal and Prabhat Publication of Delhi have already published FIVE books; and other three are going to be published soon by PRABHAT. One is  published by NBT and other three are being considered to be published by NBT.

 

NAB ( National Association for the Blinds) , Mumbai and AICB ( All India Confederation for Blinds)  , Delhi have  already converted Four books in HINDI BRAILLE , published them and distributed them to more than two  hundred Schools of VH Children in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, M.P,. U.P , Rajasthan Haryana etc.

A list of all the books is attached herewith .The list shows of all the books with titles in Hindi and English and the number of stories and number of pages  ( A4 size) in each book. Another list gives a few lines of description of each book.

1. the number of stories and hence the pages of any set of books can be increased or decreased as appropriate ( for example 10 books of Italian Folktales can be reformatted to 15 or less );

2. At the moment all these folktales are compiled in 105 books; which can be published as a series on Hindi Folktales as "" DESH VIDESH KEE LOK KATHAYEIN);

रैवन की लोक कथाएँ1
रैवन काले रंग का कौए की तरह का एक पक्षी होता है जो दुनिया में बहुत जगह पाया जाता है पर यह अमेरिका और कैनेडा के उत्तर पश्चिमी हिस्से में रहने वाले मूल निवासियों की लोक कथाओं का हीरो है। अमेरिका और कैनेडा की खोज से पहले अमेरिका और कैनेडा दो देश नहीं थे इसलिये रैवन की कथाओं को अमेरिका के मूल निवासियों की लोक कथा कहना ही ज़्यादा उचित होगा।
अमेरिका के मूल निवासियों में बहुत सारी जनजातियाँ थीं और इन सब में अलग अलग लोक कथाएँ थीं। रैवन की लोक कथाएँ कई जनजातियों में अपने अपने तरीके से कही सुनी जाती थीं और लोकप्रिय थीं।
आजकल रैवन कैनेडा देश के यूकोन प्रान्त और भूटान देश का राष्ट्रीय पक्षी है और भूटान देश की तो यह शाही टोपी में भी लगा हुआ है।
यह अपने काले रंग, सड़े हुए माँस खाने की आदत और कठोर आवाज की वजह से बहुत अपशकुनी माना जाता है पर फिर भी लोग इसको मारते नहीं है। अमेरिका के मूल निवासी इन्डियन्स के कायोटी की तरह से यह भी उनकी लोक कथाओं का एक मुख्य हीरो है। इसकी दुनिया बनाने वाली कहानियाँ बहुत मशहूर हैं।
इसको लोग जन्म और मौत के बीच का बिचौलिया मानते हैं क्योंकि यह सड़ा हुआ माँस खाता है इसलिये इस का रिश्ता मरे हुए लोगों और भूतों से है और क्योंकि इसने दुनिया बनाने में बहुत मदद की है इसलिये इसका रिश्ता ज़िन्दगी से भी है।
रैवन का जिक्र केवल अमेरिका और कैनेडा की लोक कथाओं में ही नहीं है बल्कि ग्रीस और रोम की दंत कथाओं में भी है। रोम की दंत कथाओं में अपोलो जो भविष्यवाणी करता है यह उनसे जुड़ा हुआ है। स्वीडन में इसको कत्ल हुए लोगों का भूत मानते हैं। इंगलैंड में कुछ ऐसा विश्वास है कि यदि रैवन "टावर औफ लंदन" से हटा दिये जायें तो इंगलैंड का राज्य ही खत्म हो जायेगा।
बाइबिल में भी इसका जिक्र कई जगहों पर आया है। टालमुड में रैवन नोआ की नाव के उन तीन जानवरों में से एक है जिन्होंने बाढ़ के समय में लैंगिक सम्बन्ध स्थापित किये थे और इसी लिये नोआ ने उसको सजा दी थी। कुरान में रैवन ने ऐडम के दो बेटे केन और एबिल में से केन को उसके कत्ल किये हुए भाई को दफनाना सिखाया। हिन्दुओं की तुलसीदास जी की लिखी हुई "रामचरित मानस" में यह कागभुशुण्डि जी के रूप में आता है और 27 प्रलय देख चुका है। उसमें यह गरुड़ जी को राम कथा सुनाता है।
प्रशान्त महासागर के उत्तर पूर्व के लोगों में रैवन की जो लोक कथाएँ कही सुनी जाती हैं उनसे पता चलता है कि वे लोग अपने वातावरण के कितने आधीन थे और उसकी कितनी इज़्ज़त करते थे। रैवन मिंक और कायोटी की तरह से कोई भी रूप ले सकता है, जानवर का या आदमी का। वह कहीं भी आ जा सकता है और उसके बारे में यह पहले से कोई भी नहीं बता सकता कि वह क्या करने वाला है। वैसे तो वह बहुत ही चालाक है लेकिन एक बार उसने एक बड़ी सीप में बन्द नंगे लोगों के ऊपर दया दिखायी थी। फिर वह अपनी चालबाजी से उनके लिये शिकार, मछली, आग, कपड़े और ऐसी ऐसी रस्में लेकर आया जो उनको भूतों और आत्माओं के असर से बचा सकती थीं। उसने प्रकृति से लड़ कर उन लोगों को काम के लायक बनाया।
रैवन की भूख बहुत ज़्यादा है और वह अपनी भूख कोई भी चाल खेल कर ही मिटाया करता है पर अक्सर वह चाल उसी पर उलटी पड़ जाती है।

It looks like that Sushma Gupta is the only one who has translated maximum number of foreign folk tales from English language to Hindi. It looks like a library on the subject. Perhaps, no one has even translated so many stories from English language to Hindi

Foreign Folktales in Hindi Ready-2

Till recently most foreign folktales were available only in English language. Very few folktales have been available in Hindi language. This project has been initiated only keeping this in mind that foreign folktales may be available to our Hindi readers in India and at other places.
Under this project more than 1,100 foreign folktales have been written in Hindi after reading from books and Internet and by hearing from people. Indian folktales are normally available in Hindi language that is why Indian folktales have not been included in this collection.
Besides where folktales from European countries are easily available in English, the whole folktale literature seems to be incomplete without their mention that is why some folktales have been included from those countries.
The following books have been prepared as e-Books (on CDs) in which more than 600 folktales have been given. These folktales are available to our Hindi readers any time – to tell children, to be read by children and adults alike, for reference and for research purposes, or for any other purpose the people find useful. The rest of the folktales are also being organized under various titles whose information will be made available at time to time.
This project does not stop at 1,100 folktales rather it is a continuous process so expect more to come in future.
Till now no single folktale collection has been as large as this one even in English language. The two large collectors of folktales known in Europe are: Grimm’s Brothers and the Andrew Lang. But even their collections are also not so large as this in Hindi language.
We are pleased that we could collect so many folktales at one place in Hindi language. We hope that this valuable collection will prove unique and useful to our Hindi folktale literature.
