Dr. BRIJ BHUSHAN SARAN GUPTA

Details of our ancestor family is given in another blog; https://shubhkamna-davendra.blogspot.com/2015/06/sher-maar-panju-our-earliest-known.html

and details about my grandfather are given in; https://shubhkamna-davendra.blogspot.com/2022/10/my-grandfather-shri-ram-swarup-mal.html

My father: Shri BRIJ BHUSHAN SARAN GUPTA:
My father, the eldest of his brothers and sister was a professional Medical Doctor- a student of Agra Medical School, one of the two schools then in UP; the other one in Lucknow. A very simple , social and responsible person. Would be remembered in our town for his dedicated community services. He was a very popular doctor not only in our town but around several villages nearby; only professional doctor in that locality rendering A-Z medical services. He was never a greedy person , only service oriented; He could have been a rich person but he died as a poor person only with some debts on him. At times, he had no money, borrowed from here and there for day to day survival. It was all at the cost of family;

His biography is quite long but I wish to put it in short;

He used to volunteer each summer for a months in Bhawali T.B.Sanitorium - only one in those days. T.B. was highly infectious and deadly disease in those days as there was no antibiotics, medicines or treatment. But all the risk involved, he used to do it also at the cost family ( whole family used to be worried);

Some people around him; Ch. Gulzar Singh, Shri Shyam Lal Gupta, Mahasheye Kashin Nath, Vaid Kashi Nath, Munshi Ram Krishna Lal, Padhan Daloo Singh ; His friends in Bijnor; Kr, Satya Veer, Govind Sahaye, Dr. Deva Swaroop; In Chandpur , Dr. Rameshwar Prasad,

He served for a long time as a member of Town Area and Chairman for full term during mid of 1950s.He sreved the town and the community with dedication and devotion. He is well known of his contributions during his chairmanship.

For the development of town, he not only devoted his time but also also all the savings - money and assets of our family . But he enjoyed his life in doing so and left us on July 26, 1973 with a brief illness and heart attack in Bijnor Hospital.

He lived RICH though died POOR.

My Nani; My last visit to my Nani

I do not remember the exact date or time etc when I visited my Nani in Chandpur last time . However, I do remember a few things which are quite emotional, heart touching and now  I do regret for some of them.
I went to meet her by evening train , reaching Chandpur at about 8 PM or so and returned the same night by 11;45 or so. Nani has shifted from her long time residence upstairs where I lived with her to a smaller place downstairs where mama ji ( Hakim Ajoodhiya Prasad ji ) used to live and sleep. It was for obvious reasons as she was not able to live and support herself by herself and was unable to live independently. Her physical and mental health were deteriorating every day .A family of a retired policeman ( Dewan ji) was taking her good care for her daily routine .
It was dark and Nani was taking rest and preparing to sleep when I reached there. Dewan ji,s wife told her about my arrival and she asked me very rightly as " Why I have come?" . Later when I told her that I am going back by the night train, she was very much annoyed and told me that why not I should go back now and immediately  and what was the necessity to come and visit her at all. I knew that it would have been very inconvenient for me and all others at that place if I would have stayed back as there was no enough place for me to stay. She did not talk to me much as she was annoyed and she was also not in her  proper senses.
To day when I recall this and analyse the incident, I regret for my own behaviour and pity on her helpless situation . I do not know as what could have been better for me to do any thing for the person who loved me the most.
After some time when Dewanji,s family was unable to look after any more , she moved to live with our family at Jhalu where she died after some time. What a tragic end of nani. I wonder as what happened to all her belongings in Chandpur. She had no other purpose to live a life except to look after all of us ( myself, Lakshmi, Gultoo, Santosh and Virendra ). We all lived at different times for our education with her when she was healthy and took care of all of us. In return, I do not think that any of us did anything any time for her . She left very heavy debt on us.

बचपन की यादें : Early childhood memories

UP . Board Examinations and special room

During our college years (1950-55) in the college, there were only three rooms upstairs , rest were on the ground floor. Library, Class room for science  intermediate classes and a room just above the office of the Principal were upstairs. The room above the Principal office  used to be special room during Board Examinations. Favoured students of the Principal and Management were allocated seats in that room. However, such privileged students used to be just very few. Students were allowed to copy from each other, books or notes etc. could consult each other. Some times, help was provided from outside. I never knew about it during my studies in the college. It is only when I left the college and one of my very close relative asked me if I could help him requesting  the Principal to get him in that room as he knew that I had very special relationship with him and he will not refuse me.  I was reluctant for such a favour but I had to do. To my surprise, he got the seat there and he could pass his examination because of this arrangement and rest of his career and life were settled .

old friends, JHALU

Right from childhood, a person becomes so busy that he/she does not have time to think around. As the life progresses with education, career and later with family, you mostly forget childhood friends and loose their contacts. I know that unconsciously, at time to time, they all come to mind  but due to several limitations, it becomes very difficult to trace them and to contact them. Now in retirement when, there are no such limitations and obligations, they are well remembered. There is some kind of inner force to contact them, talk to them and meet them. Thanks to Communication technology and social media, I recovered most of the the lost contacts of my friends. Once I found a few, the they provided the links to others to contacts. I feel so happy about it , contacting them, and knowing about them, their progress and family etc.It is quite rejuvenating.
 I contacted some of the old friends from JHALU and I was happy to know their progress;
SATYA BHAN AGARWAL: younger brother of Gahnsyam Das Gupta ( settled in Lucknow after retirement from PWD ; has two daughters, Kajal and Guugun ) settled in Meerut (Ph # 121-251-4821); He has been doing a lot for the renovation of our THAKURDWARA Temple and attached dharamshala in JHALU. But he was disappointed not getting any cooperation from any one in the town and other friends and family members.He was quite critical about Satyendra younger brother of Jitendra; Jitendra's Uncle , Shri Jagdish Prasad recently died at the age of 98;It was quite refreshing my memories about these people. Satya Bhan provided me the leads for Gyanendra and Ravindra, Ravi Bhushan and Vijaya Bhushan etc.
( unfortunately died recently)
Dr. GYANENDRA KUMAR:A friend from JHALU ; we had wonderful time while he was living with his Bua and studying in CHANDPUR; seems to be quite a changed person; settled very well  in Meerut (Ph# 121-260-3549 and Mobile # 941-166-7811); has one daughter and one son, both nicely settled in medical profession; briefly talked about MAHESH and his family ( Gyanendra'swife, RAKSHA is the cousin of Mahesh,; his Mausi,s daughter from Kandhla ) and his younger brother , Yogesh. He also mentioned about my old friend, RAM GOPAL VIDHU ( His son, PRACHUR is a medical Professional ) from JHALU. He has also settled in Meerut after his retirement from defence services.( Ph # 121-262-0366; cell p# 963-948-8117);
RAVINDRA KUMAR; younger brother of Gyanendra also settled in Meerut ( Ph# 121-257-5289 and M# 992-716-9493);
They have another two brothers, PUSHPENDRA and UPENDRA ( an advocate in Binor ;Ph#1342-262-080);

A few months back, I was talking to JAI PRAKASH AGARWAL from CHANDPUR now settled in Baroda after his retirement from ONGC (ph # 265-265-5664).He mentioned then about his younger brother ,
SATYA PRAKASH who has settled in ALWAR after his retirement as PRINCIPAL of a popular Public School of ALWAR; later talked to him; He is quite happy with his family, achievements of life etc.
He then mentioned about JAI PRAKASH son of Shri Hazari Lal, younger brother of my teacher Shri Ram Avtar ( other brothers are Syam Lal, Radhey and ... ); an old friend from JHALU. It was great pleasure talking to them after a long time and knowing that all of them have nicely settled in their lives.
RAM NATH Goel, ( ph # 942-502-4616; 755-246-5242); retd. as Director, Orthopaedic Services, and settled in Bhopal , now very spiritual; has been writing professional and religious books; one of his daughter is married to the son of our common friend in Chandpur, RAM MOHAN Zindal ( ph # 941-253-4512; 941-101-2394; 983-705-0512);
There is a long list of friends. I will continue supplementing the information about them in another blog.
I wish all my friends very enjoyable life in their future.

My Education

My parents did not plan or looked after my education; also for my brothers and sisters; never knew as what we were doing in the school; never knew about our home work or helping us in any way; They did not do about our education right from the primary school till we finished our education. Surprisingly, it was not only my parents but the parents of other students in the school were also not involved in the learning process of their kids. Perhaps, teachers were taking enough care about it.

I had my primary education in the village primary school run by District Administration with bare minimum facilities but with very good school teachers and good curriculum to teach various creative and learning skills.
Middle School in the town was also run by District Administration. Did my middle school education also in Jhalu ; school had even lesser facilities than primary school but good dedicated teachers. I did my primary and middle school education in URDU language medium ( Urdu was most popular language in our region ; our teachers were also mostly muslims ); English learning started in middle school and I learnt just elementary English ( though my grand father gave me at home English tuition with Shri Bharat Singh ji- a very strict teacher); In the school, I had my very good English teacher from Haldaur- Shri Chandra Pal Singh );
In 1950, I moved to Chandpur to live with my nani and to join Hindu Inter College as there was no further education facilities in my own town .HIC was one of the best known Secondary School in our region with good facilities and teachers. I finished my High School and Intermediate education there with science background- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. ( with a short break of a few months at DAV College, DehraDun ). As there was no Urdu medium in the college and Hindi was compulsory language, I have to do rest of my education here only in Hindi medium; With Elementary Hindi in High School and Hindi in Intermediate Examinations.

My Teachers in Hindu Inter College, Chandpur

After my Middle school ( Junior High School was called then as Middle School used to be up to 7th Class ; and there used to be Board Examination to pass) , I joined Hindu Inter College, Chandpur as there was no facility in my own home town. I cleared my High school Certificate Examination in 1953 and Intermediate Examination in 1955 (Now known as Higher Secondary School Examination).The teachers in the college were good and education was of very good quality. Out of several and all the good teachers, some of them left really everlasting impression because of their own special qualities.
My Principal of the College was Shri Chandra Shekhar Sinha ( C.S.Sinha), very well qualified, MA (London), DIC (London) ; a great personality;  a serious person to his responsibilities ; dedicated for his work and spent all his life savings for the development of the programmes of the college;
My Physical Training Teacher (PT Teacher), Shri Ram Swarup Sharma ; a great personality with roaring voice and serious business, known to each student of the college;
My English Teacher, Shri Ram Gopal Gupta; great teacher, very emotional; whatever, he will teach, grammar and spellings were always there; very religious and simple person; I remember two incidents of him:
 1. On the final day of our High school class before preparation leave, he gave his wonderful sermon valid in any situation any time;" By now you have put your bucket and whole rope in to the well to fetch water; Hold the last portion of the rope tightly , don not let it loose, otherwise, you will loose your bucket and the rope and will never get the water ; will ever remain thirsty - the final result; , your preparation leave is the last portion of the rope, use it very carefully, you will get your desired result. HOLD the last portion of your whole efforts very well.
2, When a student in BHU, during 1956, he asked me to see the Head Examiner of English for High School Examination Board who was also the local MLA and request him to appoint him as one of the examiner for High school Examination English papers; He wanted a little extra money to support his family ( as the School salary was not enough in those days). I was hesitant to see the Head Examiner and wrote him back as I am scared to see him as I do not know him or being a VIP-MLA ,he may refuse to see me . He wrote me back and wrote : "just request him, worst cum worst, he may refuse but certainly will not detain you and will allow you to come back."  I took a note of it and went to see him and with great persuasion and effort, I found the way to see him. As expected , he scolded me as how did I dare to approach him for this kind of thing. strategically and innocently , I told him that the person is my most respected teacher and narrated as what he wrote me.... Looking at me, hearing my humble story, he laughed and told  " Done, tell your teacher that he is appointed ". I felt so happy about it . And took a note of his advice which I used through out my life and it worked all the time very successfully : Persuasion, persuasion, no harm in trying  even if you are not successful in the end; But I always found it as a mantra of success; I remember him for both the incidents . After retirement, he took renunciation and lived in Shivanad Ashram in Rishikesh. Great person to remember.
My Mathematics Teacher, Shri S.S.Agrawal ( popularly known as BABA) was wonderful teacher. very serious. down to earth kind of person. He is the one who laid the strong foundation of Mathematics ; Student used to respect him very much and used to be scared of for the discipline in the college.

SHRADH-Tarpan

Yesterday, I was thinking about and , my neighbours in Jhlau; Ram Narain never had any family. He lived alone through out his life and died leaving no one behind;Ram Narain,s only son died with some ailment after a few year of his marriage with no children. Thereafter, Ram Narain Lived alone for rest of his life and left no one after his death. Both of them loved me and perhaps, I was the only one who enjoyed the access to them and their love.
Shri Chandra Shekhar Sinha , my Principal in Hindu Inter College , Chandpur also died leaving behind no one. He treated me like his son. I enjoyed his special favour, love and affection.I regret as why I could not support him when he really needed most in 1969.He asked me to send him only Rs.50/- to buy a few cloths though I sent him then Rs.100/- but nothing afterward.
My grandmother, mother of my uncles Om Prakash and Krishna Kumar and wife of my grandfather Shri Jagan Nath ji was very special to me. She died very poor in a very miserable condition, perhaps, she had the curse from previous lives. Her sons and only grandson also died thus leaving no one behind.
This year, I decided that I will do Sharadh and Tarpan for all of them on Amaaswaya
day.

My Naana and Naani

My Nani and Nana:

The earliest recall of my memory is about my Nani ji ( Basanti Devi) and Nana ji ( Ram Swaroop Mal Chobdar ) who belonged to a reputed Zamindar family of Chandpur. Perhaps, I was less than 5 years of age when I with my mother used to visit them often from my town to their place. They used to live in Basanti,s Dharamsala- the only place for community functions like wedding ceremonies etc. and for passengers to stay for over night or for few days. For the standard of those days, it was fairly a big dharamsala and nicely built and comfortable. Its main gate opened in front of Hindu Inter College , back door towards the Railway station. My Nani/Nana used to live in an exclusive and seperate and independent housing facility in dharamsala- in the south east corner of dharamsala, they had a big living room whose back door used to open towards railway station, one small kitchen, a big storage place where my nana used to store all the grains he will receive from his farms; then a fairly big and good tin shed in which there was a wooden chowki where most of the time, my nana ji will sit, or relax and enjoy his small smoking Hooqqa. In dharamsala itself his cows and bullocks etc. also used to live. My nana ji used to be quite busy in his Zamindari work, will hardly be going to town. He used to wear white dhoti, kurta and look always smart with his fair and handsome personality. My nani ji was from Chandpur itself , in fact , where she lived for rest of the life after the death of my Nana ji. My nani ji was actually the second wife married after the death of my nana ji,s first wife. He had a son ( Raja Ram ) from his first wife, we had hardly any relationship or contact with him or his family. My mother was the only child of my nani ji. Her parents loved her too much and I was the most dear person for them. I was like a living toy for them. I can recollect a few incidents of those days;
1. Near the front gate of dharamsala, there was a small room, there used to live one Pandit ji who used to do some pooja etc. so whenever, I will hear the sound of his tiny bell, I will sense that he is going to give now prasad, so I was prompt to reach there every day to get one batasha and one tulsi leaf, so happy to have it and eat it. his place was very neat and clean with lots of yellow flowers with nice smell of Kanair;
2; my nanaji used to put water melon in the well ( which was in the centre of the dharamsala ) to cool it down to eat in the after noon of the hot summers;
3; once, I had a corn in the back side of my foot, he removed it with nehrna ( nail cutter of those days );
4; once my buwaji and phoophaji came from Dhampur, perhaps for some treatment of my buwaji, they stayed for some time in the similar kind of accommodation in which we were living but in the southwestern corner of dharamsala;
5; Nanaji trusted servant to drive him and us in the Bullock cart, Dilawar Singh ( who in fact, worked  even after the death of nana ji.till his death in 1950s).
My nana ji, besides the property -shops and houses etc. in Chandpur, had major source of his income from his village-Shekhpuri very near to Sendwar (in Gaga,s khadar; known town as Senadwar, residence of DARONACHARYA ji  ); myself and nani ji once went for ganga,s bath to sendwar some times in 1950s;
I had some of his pictures and books which I read when I was living with nani ji during my high school education. "Gul Bakawali " was never ending fantasy novel of those days, it was in a few volumes? in Urdu; His one the frame , perhaps now lost, is well remembered to me for its words : AGAHA APNI MOT SE KOI BASHAR NAHI, SAMAN SOU BARAS KA PAL KI KHABAR NAHI "https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156893615618109&set=a.10150130484178109&type=3&theater

My nanajee died very young and I missed all his love and affection which my nani compensated later after his death. Unfortunately, I do not have any photographs of any one of them. Nothing else is also remaining, the property in the town, ( two shops in the main market area ) the lands/Zamindari etc. ( one piece of land in Chandpur with SOHAN Singh- a very honest person I have to see such a person ; SHEKHPURI was a big village with his big farming lands ; a main source of income );  I do remember a few persons like Dilawar Singh and Chawwa Singh ) and every thing in the house has been completely lost. only thing remains, the family of my nanaji,s sons family living in their ancestral house. My nani left dharamsala to live with her parental family. My mother used to treat RAJ Bahadur , the grandson of nanaji as the son of her own brother I used to visit that family at time to time without the knowledge of naniji as she will not allow me to visit them.This story ends here.

MY NANI:

Perhaps, my nani was born to take care of me and my brothers. After the death of nanaji, she moved to live with her parental family. When, with my mother visited her for the first time in the new place, no body told me about the demise of nanaji, though I asked about him and out of love, cried for him. I forgot every thing of this place though, we might be visiting her at time to time. I do remember, my first impression of the open air stair case which had very high steps and was very scary for me to get down. Some one has to escort me down. I do remember every thing after I moved to live with my nani in July 1950 for my schooling in Hindu Inter College from where I passed high school in 1953 and Intermediate in 1955. The parental house of Nani was very big. several families were living there; maternal uncle, Hakim Ajudhiya Prasad, ( son of Kedar Nath ), his adopted son Trilokee Nath and his family; ...... and mama Piyare Lal ji, first as single and later with his family.

Nani had special interest for me. I was every thing for her and hence all of her attention, care, love and affection for me. Words will fall short describing her concern about me. when ever, on my vacation , I will go Jhalu, she will be very sad and will cry as I must not go there.

She was an excellent cook, always enjoyed cooking a variety of things, always very delicious. She always used desi ghee, never any other thing . Her PAPPARS were very very tasty very much liked by all.

She was very religious, will observe all the religious festivals and events very sincerely; daily morning worship and prayers was the routine for her ( I remember, I used to wait for my prasad, usually a BATASHA and one Tulsi leaf ); will go for Ganga,s bath very often. I remember going several times with her to Garh Mukteshwar and once Senadwar near our village Shekhpuri where we stayed in our camp (Dera) for a short time.

I can now think of that she has been suffering with High Blood Pressure ( in those days, no body took note of it, so that it could be treated ). As a consequence of that she was suffering with epileptic fits also which became very frequent at later stage. During last phase of her life, she had very miserable life, not taken proper care or treatment. She even lost her memory and senses to recognize things or people. She died in Jhalu though all the last rites including funeral were done by mama ji, shri Jyoti Prsasad ji. Her end was really terribly bad.

When I think of her to day, I feel that if I am in debt, I am in debt for her. She did every thing for me and I could not do any thing for her even in her most needed times to help her and to serve her. I will ever remain under debt to her as I will never will be able to pay back even a bit. These days in 2010, I look back with regrets that I could not do any thing for her and can not do any thing now . I remember her every night and pay my regards to her and wish that we must live together again at some point of time. My brothers, except the youngest one, KML Garg, and my sister Lakshmi lived with her for our education. She was never tired looking after us. I wonder if any one of them even remember her.

She was not educated or even literate but very wise in all the worldly matters. In fact, I learned many of my practical lessons from her especially shopping and dealing with various kinds of people.

The Estate of Ram Swaroop Mal Chobdar was completely over/lost for ever with the death of nani ji.Nothing remains in their memory. The house was very rich with all the things and lot of Jwellary.
