Living in KODAMBAKKAM, Madras with an infant; an experience

In 1966-67, I was posted in Eletrical Party to work for oil and gas explration in Cauvery basin, I was sent in advance party to Madras with the main task to receive the camping equipment sent from DehraDun and to be dispatched to Karaikal ( Pndicherry) . Mr Gujral, one of the party member already in Madras made an arrangement ( on my request) for a temporay one room residence in Kodambakkam - a locality where most of the low class cinema industry workers lived.
I reached there with my wife and a three months old son -MALANKI ( name given by my my Russian colleagues working in the party- meaning CHHOTU) in the afternoon, tired from a long journey by GT express from Delhi to Madras ( fastest train for Madras  in those days); I had just bare minimum things as we take to field camps. By any standard , the room was very shabby , dark with no ventilation except a small window. Any way, it was night, made arrangement to sleep on the floor. Next morning, we found a large number of bed bugs, I wonder as from where they came and slowly disappeared. Neighbourhood was all with low class people including the landlord who was also living in the same premises. To our surprise, in the morning, we found no toilet , when asked about it, the landlady told that we all go to the nearby fields to easdown, and hence we may also go; terrible , we were not prepared for that , then she shold told that we can use the bathing place ( not a proper bathroom ) and wash it with the water. There was no water , or water tap over there. However, she gave us a bucket for the water , and water is to be fetched from the well inside the premises. We used the bathing place as toilet and bath room and slowly slowly arragement was made for lady helper to get us water from the well and drinking water from somewhere from the tap. We learnt as how to live in that small place with no or bare minimum facilities among the low class people. It was very weired kind of experience. Fortunately , railway station for local trains was very near- just at walkable distance; other facilities getting some vegetables, milk etc. were also near by; a good restaurant with a good and inexpensive food was very near to this plave; we never coocked the meals at home, only outside. People over there were very cooperative and supportive, even without knowing the local language- Tamil, we manged our affairs. We lived there for about four weeks but a kind of different and weired kind of experience living with the family and a child of few months old. When I think about it, I just wonder as Mr. Gujral thought of this place for us, how he found it for us and how we could live in that place. No regrets, we got very strange kind of experience and enjoyed our living there as every evening used to be wonderful for us at Marina or Saffire ... etc. We used to walk a lot as others in Madras used to do so; Kodambakkam was a small township within a big metropliton city of Madras- as simple as Madras (now Chennai) itself.

MY CAR WAS STOLEN FROM THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

My Subaru Car was Stolen from the University Campus.
It was evening when I visited our friend Prof Patel near the University club. Left my family in their House and I went to the University club, parked my car and went to visit Prof Martha, our External Examiner from USA. just after a few minutes, when I came back , I found that my car  is gone. Dr Anil Jain was also there with Prof. Patel,s family. He took me to nearby concerned police station , filed the theft report. Police officer told us that forget about getting it back, it has already crossed the border to reach Ghana- a short distance and travelling time hardly an hour. Also that it is very common practice to take the stolen cars to Ghana and cannibalize them for spare parts - so they completely vanish.
It is normally done by auto mechanics as they get duplicate keys when some one leaves the car with them for repairs or maintenance services. Well, my friends and well wishers came to sympathize with me as it was a total loss  because of no insurance for theft ( I never thought that my old car would be stolen from campus) ; though I never felt about the loss- just a material loss ..
The Principal of Immaunuel College of Theology- Sushma,s Boss was so sympathetic that even without our asking he immediately granted the car loan and we bcould buy  another car just after a few days. In Nigeria also like USA/Canada , it is difficult to move around for anything, dropping children in their school, going for  job, dropping Sushma for her job, for shopping etc.
Great experience.

Robbers and their style of working in Nigeria

During my stay in Nigeria ( 1976-1988),  there were several stories of robberies in Nigeria, Ibadan and even on our university campus. This is one kind of story out of several kinds. The interesting part of it is that robbers will enter the house and ask for electronic gadgets like TV, Computers , Music system etc - the expensive stuff and then a question if those items were insured ? If not, they will ask them to get  insured soon , and that they will be back after some time . " Do not try to be smart to inform the police otherwise you have to bear the consequences "  after telling this, they will the premises without taking any stuff or harming any body in any way. Funny enough, they do not want stuff at your cost, they want that insurance should bear the cost of it.

UP . Board Examinations and special room

During our college years (1950-55) in the college, there were only three rooms upstairs , rest were on the ground floor. Library, Class room for science  intermediate classes and a room just above the office of the Principal were upstairs. The room above the Principal office  used to be special room during Board Examinations. Favoured students of the Principal and Management were allocated seats in that room. However, such privileged students used to be just very few. Students were allowed to copy from each other, books or notes etc. could consult each other. Some times, help was provided from outside. I never knew about it during my studies in the college. It is only when I left the college and one of my very close relative asked me if I could help him requesting  the Principal to get him in that room as he knew that I had very special relationship with him and he will not refuse me.  I was reluctant for such a favour but I had to do. To my surprise, he got the seat there and he could pass his examination because of this arrangement and rest of his career and life were settled .
